+ HISTORICO-LITURGICAL NOTE:

The veneration of St Matthew at Rome goes back to the 5th century. By the 8th century, there was also a vigil of the feast, as for the other apostles. The date, September 21, is found in the Jerome Calendar, although in the East the date of the feast is November 16 for the Byzantines and the Syrians and October 9 for the Copts.

The New Testament describes Matthew as Levi, the son of Alphaeus, and a tax collector (Mark 2:13-14). He was born at Capernaum (Matthew 9:9) and is the author of the First Gospel, which was written in Aramaic. Later accounts state that Matthew evangelized Persia (according to St Ambrose and St Paulinus of Nola) and probably Ethiopia (according to the Roman Mythology). He was martyred in Ethiopia and his relics were eventually transferred to Salerno in the 10th century, according to Pope Gregory VII.
